Botswana: Makgato Attends Belt, Road Forum

Gaborone — Minister of Transport and Communications, Ms Dorcas Makgato is in Beijing, China, to attend the second Belt and Road Forum from April 23 to 27.

A press release from the ministry says while in China, the minister will have an opportunity to visit the Huawei manufacturing plant. The release says Huawei is regarded as one of the top telecommunications companies in the world.

The minister will also explore the latest Information and Communications Technology (ICT), particularly in research and development and tour the Huawei head office in Shenzhen and the manufacturing plant in Dongguan on April 28 and 29 respectively.

The thematic forum on infrastructure connectivity themed: Belt and Road Cooperation: Shaping a shared future, the release says it will focus on enhancing infrastructure that will increase connectivity between China and trading partners in Africa, Eurasia and Oceania.

The forum, which was launched by the President of China in 2013, is a consultative mechanism under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The BRI is a major Chinese diplomatic and economic instrument to promote connectivity and economic development through trade and investment.

The first BRI forum, as per the release, was held in 2017 and over 100 countries participated at the initiative. Botswana, it says, has been invited to join, and is agreeable in principle, and consultations are ongoing to ensure due diligence before taking a decision.

Minister Makgato left on April 20, accompanied by transport and communications permanent secretary, Mr Kabelo Ebineng and some ministry officials. The delegation is expected to return on May 1.
